Some 1988 GL1500s may experience a slight hesitation during light acceleration. This condition usually occurs just above idle speed. A carburetor kit (containing slots-jets, jet needles and vacuum pistons}, ignition control unit and carburetor control unit are now available for improved low speed driveability on affected GL1500s.
In addition. correct routing of the carburetor hoses and vacuum lines is necessary to ensure proper engine performance. Other driveability symptoms. such as idle fluctuation and afterfire, may result if the hoses and lines are pinched, kinked or loose. Pay special attention to the correct routing of flee hoses/lines described and shown in HIE bulletin.
Repair Procedure
- As part of PDI. test ride new GL1500s and check low speed engine performance. If the motorcycle has any of the symptoms noted above. perform the repairs described in this bulletin before release to your customers.
- The procedures that follow apply to both 49a State and California models.
- Carefully remove and install the plastic body parts and covers. Be sure ALL fasteners and tabs are removed or released first.
- Be sure ALL hoses arc routed as shown or described to prevent pinching or kinking. A pinched. kinked or loose hose may cause other symptoms that could contribute to poor engine performance. (Also refer to Service Bulletin GL1500s #1 for carburetor vent hose routing and vacuum fuel valve installation.)
The engine won’t start or is difficult to start due to a carbon-fouled spark plug. The problem occurs on ACS (Automatic Choke System) GCV160 engines on certain Troy-Bilt lawn mower models. ARCS (Auto Return Choke System) engines are not affected.
The fouling is most likely to occur when the engine is started and the choke butterfly takes too long to open, or the shaft binds in the carburetor, resulting in a fouled spark plug.

The AEM Short Ram Air Intake System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. It is the most advanced short pipe air intake system on the market. Each system is specifically engineered for its application. All AEM Short Ram Air Intake Systems deliver maximum performance gains through lightweight, all- aluminum, mandrel-bent tubing that is tuned in both length and diameter. The aluminum will not crack in extended use like plastic. The tube length and diameter are matched for each specific engine to give power over a broad RPM range. Unlike plastic systems that use a continually diverging cross-section, we take advantage of the acoustical energy in the inlet duct to promote cylinder filling during the intake valve-opening event.
