This HowTo will go into the requirements, tools and procedure to remove and install a CAM on a Dodge 4.7 liter Engine.
Pre-Install Tips
Step 1
• Set TOP Dead Center (TDC) So V8 marks on both Sprockets are at 12 O’clock!/Crank balancer TDC mark should be aligned to TDC mark on block!
Step 2
• Mark One Link on Chain at (TDC) V8 marks with paint Pen!
Step 3
• Zip Tie Chain to Cam Sprockets (Through two holes in left sprocket and one hole in right sprocket)! Note: Do this after loosening sprocket bolt but before removing bolt and sprocket!
Disassembly (Actual)– Valve Covers
•To Remove the valve covers on a Dodge RAM 1500 (2002) you just need Perform the following simple steps:
•Remove Air Cleaner assembly this includes (Airbox, Tube, Filter, Resonating chamber the tube is attached to)
•On the right(Passenger side) move the heater hose out of the way (tie them back with wire or string) Disconnect Spark plug Coil packs and Injector harness and pull it over (as best you can) the fuel rail.
•On the Left (Drivers side) You just need to Disconnect Spark plug Coil packs and Injector harness and pull it over (as best you can) the fuel rail.
•Remove both Valve Covers (I used and Air Ratchet, had them off in no time flat)!
Note: There will be two heater hoses on the right side that run along the valve cover you will need to pull out of the way! That’s it!
Disassembly Instructions– left(Drivers side) Cam
Step 1
• Insert Locking Wedge Tool to secure Chain Tensioner!
• Warning: Do not force wedge past the narrowest point between the chain strands.
Step 2
• Attach Spanner Wrench with adapters
• Loosen Cam/Sprocket bolt!
Step 3
• Some Manuals may imply that you need to remove the Camshaft Position Sensor; This is in fact NOT Necessary, Just be VERY Careful not to damage the sensor OR the Sensor wheel when Removing the CAM!
