This month’s column is the short version of an article I wrote for Miata Magazine about a Mazda Miata cylinder head and intake manifold project we were contracted for by Bill Cardell of “Flyin Miata”. Flyin Miata is a Miata high performance specialty house located in Grand Junction, Colorado. The full text version, pictures and dyno charts of this article are in the magazine version out this month. The cylinder head and intake manifold was from a Miata 1.6-liter engine that had undergone a bit of Bill’s turbo add-on magic. The subject in question is a streetcar and would be a daily driver. We would remain conservative here; this is not an all out race engine or car. Still, we could and would help make it stronger.

Installation Procedure:
1. Remove truck bed
2. Chalk front tires to ensure truck does not roll.
3. Jack rear of truck up at FRAME RAIL and secure with jack stand at REAREND. Duplicate on both sides. Remove wheels, shocks, sway bar and mounts. When finished rear of truck should be suspended by 2 jack stands on axle with wheels removed and suspension STILL INTACT.
4. Using FRAME SECTION as guide, place FRAME SECTION next to outside of truck frame rail to check for clearances of rivets, tabs, and brackets etc. that will impede the FRAME SECTION from sliding onto frame rail.
5. Remove and/or relocate any rivets, tabs, brackets etc.
6. Slide FRAME SECTION over frame rail into place, it will be a tight fit and usually will need help with a mallet to knock onto frame rail.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 on opposite side.
8. With FRAME SECTION in place mount REAR CROSS MEMBER to top rear of notch next to upper bag placement. Loosely bolt REAR CROSSMEMBER in place to allow movement.

REMOVAL OF EXISTING MIRRORS
1. Have both windows in the down position. To remove the trim panel on both doors, first remove the panel around the door handle, using 10 mm socket remove the screw holding the door handle. Next remove the four screws that hold the door trim panels in place (See diagram A on page 5). Remove the door trim panel by lifting up and then out.
2. Unplug the electric cord that comes from the mirrors located at the rear of each mirror at the mirror mount area.
3. Support the stock mirror while removing the 3 mirror mount lug nuts using a 10 mm socket. Save the stock nuts for later in the install.

Flange Requirements:
DEI’s resilient seated (RS) valves are designed for installation between ANSI Class 125/150 flat or raised faced flanges. Gaskets are not required. Lined pipe, heavy wall pipe or flanges must have a minimum allowable inside diameter at the centered body face to clear the disc sealing edge when opening the valve.

Storage:
The valves should be stored on a pallet or “skid” in a clean, dry warehouse. If the valves must be stored outside, the following apply:
1. Valves must be kept off the ground high enough to avoid standing water.
2. Cover the valves with a water repellant cover (not included with valve).
