The Honda Element AEM Cold Air Intake System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. It is the most advanced cold air intake system on the market. Each system is specifically engineered for its application. All AEM Cold Air Intake Systems deliver maximum performance gains through lightweight, all-aluminum, mandrel-bent tubing that is tuned in both length and diameter. The aluminum will not crack in extended use like plastic. The tube length and diameter are matched for each specific engine to give power over a broad RPM range. Unlike plastic systems that use a continually diverging cross-section, we take advantage of the acoustical energy in the inlet duct to promote cylinder filling during the intake valve-opening event. Every intake is coated with a high-gloss, heat-reducing Zirconia based powder coating.

Installation Instructions for: Part Number 21-472 2002-2004 Subaru Impreza RS 2.5L 2003-2004 Subaru Impreza TS 2.5L 2003-2004 Subaru Outback Sport 2.5L.
The AEM Cold Air System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars.
Each system is engineered for the particular application. The AEM Cold Air System differs from
all others in several ways. We take the inlet air from outside of the engine compartment where
the inlet air is considerably cooler than the hot under hood air. The cooler inlet air temperature
translates to more power during the combustion process because cool air is denser than warm
air. AEM has conducted extensive inlet air temperature studies and we have seen temperature
reductions of up to 50 degrees by pulling air from outside of the engine compartment. The air
mass flow to the engine is increased because of the increased airflow and reduced inlet
temperature, which translates to more power. The AEM Cold Air Systems come with complete
instructions for ease of installation.

The AEM Performance Air Induction System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. It is the most advanced short pipe air intake system on the market. Each system is specifically engineered for its particular application. All AEM Short Ram Air Intake Systems deliver maximum performance gains through lightweight, all-aluminum, mandrel-bent tubing that is tuned in both length and diameter. The tube length and diameter are matched for each specific engine to give power over a broad RPM range. Unlike systems that use a continually diverging cross-section, we take advantage of the acoustical energy in the inlet duct to promote cylinder filling during the intake valve-opening event.

Machining Instructions:
NOTE: Stand position is determined upon valve length and rocker pivot length. Please refer to the chart below to determine the proper machining dimensions.
1) MEASURE VALVE TIP TO SPRING SEAT DIMENSION (DIM A) AND REFER TO “Z” COORDINATE (DIM B) ON CHART. MILL OEM ROCKER PEDISTALS DOWN FLUSH WITH THE TOP OF THE HEAD BOLT BOSS BETWEEN #1 & 3 INTAKE VALVE. THIS IS YOUR .000” Z HEIGHT. MILL REMAINDER OF ROCKER PEDISTAL TO COORDINATES LISTED UNDER DIM B.
2) SET THE “X” .000” TO THE CENTERLINE OF #3 & 5 EXHAUST VALVES. SET THE “Y” .000” TO THE CENTER OF THE FACTORY 3/8 SHAFT MOUNTING BOLTS ALREADY MACHINED IN THE HEAD.
3) DRILL AND TAP 9/16-12 X .750” DEEP AT “X” AND “Y” COORDINATES LISTED FOR VALVE LENGTH AND ROCKER BODY BEING USED. INSTALL SUPPLIED INSERTS INTO HEAD.
4) ATTACH ROCKER STAND USING SUPPLIED BOLTS AND TORQUE TO 45 FT/LBS.

The following instructions begin after the timing cover and old timing set have been removed.
Installing the timing set and degreeing the camshaft will be easier if you loosen the rocker arms so that the camshaft can turn freely. You should be able to turn the camshaft by hand. Make sure that the engine mounting surfaces and your new timing set have been thoroughly cleaned with a good solvent. If you are using a timing set with three keyways, select the appropriate keyway for your camshaft timing specifications. COMP Cams ® recommends the standard timing position for most applications. This position uses the round or “O” timing and keyway marks. Standard Timing Location: This is the same as original O.E.M. setting. Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked “O”.
