DISASSEMBLE 1. Remove knuckle. Refer to Steering and Suspension. 2. Using ST1 and ST2, remove hub from rear housing. 3. Remove back plate from rear housing. 4. Using a standard screwdriver, remove outer and inner oil seals. CAUTION: Use new oil seals. 5. Using flat bladed screwdriver, remove snap ring. 6. Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine under cover.
2. Lower vehicle. Remove radiator coolant reservoir, and set aside. Remove electric cooling fan
and radiator shroud.
3. On Impreza and Forester, remove accessory drive belt cover. On all models, remove accessory
drive belts.
4. Hold crankshaft pulley stationary, and remove crankshaft pulley center bolt. Remove
crankshaft pulley. Remove timing belt covers.

Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove P/S reservoir from radiator shroud. Remove upper fan shroud. Remove serpentine belt.
2. Remove generator with brackets and lay aside. Using Hub Puller (J-24420-B), remove crankshaft pulley hub. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN. Remove front timing case cover bolts, and cover.
3. Using large screwdriver, remove crankshaft front seal. DO NOT distort timing gear cover during seal removal.
CAUTION: To prevent oil leakage, coat crankshaft pulley hub keyway with RTV sealant before installation.
