1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent an accidental short circuit.
2. Remove the volume by pulling out towards the rear of the vehicle.

Various 1997-2008 vehicles equipped with either 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive and equipped with control trac may exhibit a shudder on acceleration/deceleration, binding in slow speed turns or noise from the front driveline and/or transfer case. The shudder/binding will occur with the vehicle being operated in the awd/auto 4×4 mode. The shudder/binding may be due to incorrect tire circumference or improper tire inflation pressures.

The mounting procedure outlined below covers the 1997-2002 Jeep Wrangler. Note that a
Front Gross Axle Rating (FGAWR) of 2500 lbs. is required. A suspension upgrade and additional
ballast may be necessary. You will need to refer to the illustrations and familiarize yourself with each
of the undercarriage components and their relative position to each other. Then proceed as follows:
Begin by removing the four screws that hold the plastic “Jeep” valance in place above the
bumper. Keep these screws as they will need to be reinstalled.

Deadbolt – Rear Door
1 Tape the REAR DOOR BRACKET TEMPLATE to the inside of the right rear door as shown in Fig. 1.
2 Carefully mark the hole locations with a center punch and drill holes as indicated on the template.
3 Using a metal cutting jigsaw cut away the area indicated by the dashed lines on the template.
4 Tape the DOOR JAMB TEMPLATE to the door as shown in Fig. 2.

Removal (Frontier, Pathfinder, QX4 & Xterra)
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove the engine undercover. Drain coolant and remove the radiator.
Remove engine cooling fan and water pump pulley. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove spark plugs.
2. Remove distributor protector. Remove A/C compressor drive belt idler bracket. Remove fresh air intake
tube from rocker cover. Remove thermostat housing hose.
3. Rotate crankshaft to set No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. See Fig. 1 . Remove crankshaft
pulley bolt and remove crankshaft pulley. Remove front upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 2 .
4. Align punch mark on left camshaft sprocket with punch mark on timing belt upper rear cover. Align
punch mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch on oil pump housing. See Fig. 3 . Install crankshaft pulley
bolt so that crankshaft can be rotated.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section. 2. Remove or disconnect the following: • Negative battery cable • Transfer case, if equipped • Transmission 1 • Pressure plate. Loosen the bolts evenly in /2 turn steps. • Clutch disc To install: 1. Install or connect the following: • Clutch disc and pressure plate. Tighten the pressure plate bolts evenly in /2 turns to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm) for 2.4L and 2.5L engines; 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) for 4.0L engines. • Transmission • Transfer case, if equipped • Negative battery cable

STEP ONE: Determine proper bracket placement.
1) Find the pre-existing holes equally spaced on the pinch weld.
2) Factory mounting holes have changed throughout model years and will require one of the following. ( Fig A & B )
