Removal Of Automatic Locking HubCaution: The brake shoe and brake drum grease is a special type and should not be substituted when it is necessary to change the grease, replace the hub body and brake assembly and/or brake drum 2. Remove axle bolt with washer. 3. Remove hub body. a. Remove the mounting nuts. b. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap on the bolt heads and remove the cone washers. 1. Disconnect the fog lamp harnesses if applicable, and then remove the bumper.
a. Remove the bumper mount plates from in between the frame rail and radiator. Discard the mount plate hardware.
b. Permanently remove the air dam from the truck frame crossmember. Remove the fasteners that are pressed into the bumper bracket on the frame rail. Secure the bracket and frame wall with vise grips and then use a hammer to punch out the fasteners.

Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove P/S reservoir from radiator shroud. Remove upper fan shroud. Remove serpentine belt.
2. Remove generator with brackets and lay aside. Using Hub Puller (J-24420-B), remove crankshaft pulley hub. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN. Remove front timing case cover bolts, and cover.
3. Using large screwdriver, remove crankshaft front seal. DO NOT distort timing gear cover during seal removal.
CAUTION: To prevent oil leakage, coat crankshaft pulley hub keyway with RTV sealant before installation.

In late 1995, six months after Toyota decided to move forward with its revolutionary hybrid, the Prius, and two years before the car was supposed to go into production in Japan, the engineers working on the project had a problem. A big problem. The first prototypes wouldn’t start. “On the computer the hybrid power system worked very well,” says Satoshi Ogiso, the team’s chief power train engineer. “But simulation is different from seeing if the actual part can work.” It took Ogiso and his team more than a month to fix the software and electrical problems that kept the Prius stationary. Then, when they finally got it started, the car motored only a few hundred yards down the test track before coming to a stop.
